Off-Track Door and Dented Panel Repair in Flower Mound

Off-track reset from $120 to $250; panel replacement $250 to $800

Stop. Do not press the opener button again. A garage door that has jumped the track is held in place by friction and the remaining rollers, and running the motor can pull it the rest of the way out. Unplug the opener, keep cars and children away, and call (469) 947-3776.

How doors come off the track

The usual causes in Denton County:

  • Something hit the door. A car bumper, a trash can, a lawnmower handle. The panel bends, the roller stem pops out of the track, and the door hangs.
  • A cable broke and the door racked sideways, pulling rollers out of the vertical track.
  • Worn rollers with short stems or cracked wheels that finally let go under load.
  • Loose track bolts. The lag bolts into the framing back out over years of vibration, the track flexes, and the roller escapes.
  • A bent horizontal track from someone hanging storage on it or from a ladder stored against it.
  • A bad opener setting. A door that slams at full speed into the floor eventually knocks itself loose.

Putting a door back on the track

Resetting a door is more than prying the rollers back in. The tech releases tension so the door is not fighting the springs, checks for bent track and straightens or replaces the bent sections, and inspects every roller and hinge. Rollers that let go once are replaced. The door is then lifted back onto the track, the cables are rewound on the drums, the springs are retensioned, and the door is balanced.

Track bolts are tightened into solid wood, and where the framing has split, the track is moved to a better anchor point. Then the opener limits and force are reset, because the cause of many off-track calls is an opener that was set too hard to begin with.

Most off-track doors are back in service in one visit. The ones that are not have a panel that creased when the door racked, and that panel has to be ordered.

Dented and cracked panels

A garage door is only as stiff as its sections. A panel with a crease across it, a crack at a hinge, or a dent that has pulled the stiles out of square will flex every time the door moves. That flex pulls the hinges, pops rollers, and eventually bends the track.

Single panel replacement runs $250 to $800 when the door is a current model and the section is available. The new section is installed with new hinges on that panel, and the door is rebalanced because a new section rarely weighs exactly what the old one did. When two or more panels are damaged on an older door, a new door is often close in price and comes with new hardware and a warranty. We give you both numbers.

Denton County is not in the Texas coastal windstorm zone, so no windstorm certificate is required, but spring storms and straight-line wind push hard on a 16 foot door, and a reinforced or wind-rated door is worth the modest premium on wide openings and homes on open ground.

After a vehicle strike

Check the door frame and the track mounting, not just the panel. A car that hits a door hard enough to dent it usually bends the lower track and sometimes shifts the jamb. Our invoice itemizes the parts and labor and includes photos, which is what the insurance adjuster asks for.

Photograph the door before anything is moved, then unplug the opener and call (469) 947-3776. The photos go to the adjuster and the tech both.

Off-Track & Panel Repair questions

The door is off the track. Can I push it back in?

No. The door is being held by whatever is still in the track and by the cables. Forcing it can drop the door or bend the track further. Pull the opener plug so nobody presses the button, and call.

Can a dented panel be fixed, or does it have to be replaced?

Shallow dents in steel can sometimes be pulled and the panel still works. A crease, a crack, or a dent at a hinge line means the panel has lost its stiffness and should be replaced.

Will a new panel match my door?

If the door is a current model, yes, in the same style and color, though sun-faded doors show some difference. If the model is discontinued, we tell you before ordering.

Someone backed into the door. Is it covered by insurance?

Often, under the homeowner policy or the auto policy of the car that hit it. We provide an itemized invoice and photos for the claim.

Most repairs are finished in a single visit.
